Help please before this rooster becomes dinner

Any act of flying at you in an aggressive manner...even if there is no contact...is flogging. I'm glad it's working for you, please keep us posted!

About 10 years ago I had a rooster that would penetrate a pair of rubber boots with his spurs. He would bring blood every time some one got close to him. Now I have a 8 month old RIR rooster and he is acting aggressive to me. He comes up from behind me and bumps into me and at the same time he pecks my boot. I was curious why he did this. He's not as bad as the one 10 years ago but I think he might get worse. The suggestions here has helped me understand his actions. I like having a rooster with my flock to help take care of his ladies. Plus I like to watch and hear them. I have two RIR that come to me and beg to be petted or fed from my hand and I enjoyed returning their kindness. Also I have two that are afraid of me, I've never hurt or shown any aggressiveness to them. I was trying to teach them not to be afraid of me and by doing this I'm sure my rooster was watching and not liking what he saw me doing. I learned from this thread not to do this because the rooster takes offense. He's king of the flock and he showing me who's boss. He thinks I may be hurting his two ladies. I'll quit showing special attention to them and return his aggressive actions with same action if he continues. He's still young and I think he's doing this from instinct. I like instinct because he had no head rooster to teach him. I have predators like, hawks, coyotes, dogs, cats etc.. and he, with this instinct, can better take care of his ladies. In return I get the pleasure of watching and hearing him.

I know that he is there to take care of the girls but as far as Im concerned he needs to know I am the head of all of them I treat them all very good and I just will not put up with this aggressive behavior But I have been carrying him around at night and hold him down before I let him go to the coup and it seems to be be working because he has not done it to me for a week or so now. I really like him and am trying my best to keep him because he does take good care of the girls. But tonight he came and got on one of the younger gals and than she came over where he was and he pecked at her I dont know why but I sure hope he isnt mean to them cause it wont be good for him if he is Thank you all for helping me I really learn a lot here

Just wanted to give a update on our rooster It has been a few weeks now and I have been caring him around in the evenings I thought he was getting better and was getting comfortable not having to watch my back until today. After I came home and gave them all their afternoon snack as I walked away he came at me again and I turned to face him and he was in what I think is an attack mode with his feathers all puffed out and so I walked at him and he would run off and than turn again like he wanted to fight Well I just waited till he went to bed and I got him out of the coup and instead of walking him around I just held him down until he quit trying to get away I was trying to be as nice as I can before but now its going to be about dominance. So I will try this and see how he does before he becomes dinner.

Wow, these posts have been most helpful. I have 6 month old roo and he has been doing this. I walk out with a broom and make him back up when he does do it. He doesn't do it all the time. They have been in the coop for the last three days because of the weather. Today was there first day out. My dog sitter texted me to tell me that he now has flogged her. She is not the bravest sole with chickens, so she screamed and ran up onto the deck to get away. Now what? Do I train her/tell her to carry a broom and then work with him myself?

I dont know if this is the norm for all roosters but I do know I am not carrying a broom out and if this holding down thing doesnt work Yard bird for dinner But if I were you I would start now with holding him down Ours is a year old now and he had just started doing it a couple of months ago But he is getting worse I do hope this works

well I have held him down 2 nights now after the first time when I came home today he would not come near me and I held him down again tonight He did not like it I am sure hoping it works
