Help please- Chicken Bonding and Culling Question

We're back from the vet.

There was just no way we could afford to have them x-ray her, and without the x-ray they said there was nothing they could do for her.
Even if we had done the x-ray, she had developed a large abscess on her hock and they said it would have been difficult if not impossible to heal.
(Though they did sincerely compliment me for the splint I had made for her.)
In the end I asked them to euthanize her, but told my kids we were leaving her there for treatment as she was very sick and might possibly die. It cost $36.
BTW- they might have thought we were nuts, but the vet and her assistant were very kind to us, and they even took her 'footprint' so the kids would have something to remember her.
Zipper is still crying out for her, I hope he forgets her soon.

I didn't know chickens bonded- it's sad but sweet!

I'm really sorry you lost your little chick but you did what you could. I had you on my mind all day. Hope your kids handle it ok and Zipper finds another little buddy.

So soo sorry...I know how hard that is. Making that decision is so hard, but I think you did the right thing by her. I'm sure that once you give Zipper some extra attention, you all will feel better soon.

Thank you all for the support.
As sad as it was, it's a relief not to not have to worry about her any longer.
We distracted ourselves by digging for worms in the garden this evening, then feeding them to the chicks-
Hilarious!
(and Zipper has settled back in with the others now- whew!)

I am so sorry for you loss. Hope Zipper buddies up with the other chicks.

It's hard when you have kids too. Severeal times I have just told mine the chickens flew away and on the inside I was crying.
