Help please, Eggbound, tried lots of things, WARNING GRAPHIC PICTURE

OMG:eek: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe an exacto blade and try to scratch the shell over and over in the same place until you nick it enough and could break through, but geez! you would have to be soooo careful!

maybe constantly ky the area so as she pushes the lubrication will work its way in.

I am so totally guessing and nervous about any advice besides suggesting professional care

I am so sorry, keep us posted please!

I would not try to puncture the egg. I would think if she didn't get all of it out an infection would occur.

Jeepers I have no other advice. Have you tried to push on her pelvic area?

A nice warm wet cloth and hold it on her there - that will help - even some oil would help if you don' thave KY. BAG BALM perhaps?

GOSH 2 days is a long time!

How long did you keep her in a warm bath? Maybe she needs to stay longer.
Even though you don't have a vet close by, I'd suggest calling one that treats exotics and birds. Perhaps somebody at a veterinary school will tell you what to do. It might be that your pullet will have to have a calcium gluconate injection (I don't know the dosage). You can find it in the cattle section of a farm supply for about $5 a bottle.

I noticed that dlhunicorn hasn't posted in a few days...she would be able to help.

I'm not sure about the x-acto knife method, what if it slips?

And I think that a broken egg with all that raw skin would be a set up for more disaster. I think a lot of grease/ky/oil, warm bath. Wow, poor baby!

If not already, she should be in the dark so her body does not continue to generate eggs.

There are threads on this site about giving a TUMS to help give her the muscle strength to push the egg out. Hurry with that. (I guess crush it and mix with food you know she'll eat). Or if need be, mix with water and slowly eye dropper along her beak so can swallows of her own accord. Continue with the lubrication and see if the combination does the trick soon. She could go into heart failure if she doesn't get this ostrich egg OUT. If she is tolerating the warm baths without enormous stress continue with that too.

Situations like this do sometimes require breaking the egg to get it out. Dangers of perforation and infection come with that package, unfortunately but she can't go on like this much longer. There are threads on this site re: how to break the egg. I don't have one of those threads handy right now - maybe another reader will be able to quickly provide a link.

I hope very much that she'll be okay, poor girl.

Ok, I've been thinking....if you have a dremel tool and a syringe:
bore a small hole through the shell and use the syringe to withdraw the egg's contents. Once the egg is empty, you will be able to collapse the shell. Remove the fragments carefully because these can cut your hen.

there are so many negatives about breaking the egg in the abdomen. The leftover shells inside can cut and cause infection, the bleeding from the shells can cause death. I have had three eggbound birds and one I had to euthanize with the egg still inside. she was dying. I was horrible. the other eventually passed the egg with a warm bath that we soaked her in and vegetable oil as a lubricant. I just kept massaging her vent and abdomen. the stress can easily kill them too. It is really a difficult thing to watch. Call a vet for advice.
