Help please...have a few questions before we buy some property

Yes, that is kind of the idea if I can make it work. Lower density for sure. That or find some other uses for them

Did you say you have two such structures? Would be good if you're looking to do laying hens AND meat hens. Better if they are separated as they'll have different feed requirements. For your laying hens, more forage the better. I can't say what you would need to do to sanitize the earth, but if you're starting smaller, you may only have to sanitize one pasture section for the first year and then let the others go fallow. A good year or two should help the land cleanse itself. Let the wild grasses grow for the first year and casually spread around a companion crop. Purslane (for instance) grows like a weed, is very healthy for people and chickens, and draws up nutrients from the soil.

When you DO start foraging your pullets, mow the grasses in their pasture first. Too much tall grass on the outset can cause their crops to become impacted.

Welcome to BackYardChickens!

Huh...not sure why you'd buy infrastructure like that if you weren't going to utilize it at at least half capacity.

Don't think anyone on this forum is raising birds at anywhere near what you could fit in those buildings...they are HUGE!

Like I said, mainly buying for the land. Just so happens to have these 2 chicken houses on it.
Was thinking of the cost that equipment adds to the purchase.
Maybe you could sell some/alot of it.
The buildings could be used for a multitude of endeavors.

You could build a big 'run' against the building then section numerous pastures off of that with doors to each for rotation.

Thank you guys for your input!

Yep, there are two of those huge buildings! That's why I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.
Can't tell you how jealous I am of your land and outbuildings :) I'd be beside myself with what to do as well! I'd want to have a woodshop again for sure ... if not, I'd do chickens in one, and other poultry or goats I the other!

Grow house.
I was looking at some similar turkey set up years ago. Couldn't get my act together fast enough before builders moved in and snatched them up. Some of the properties has up to 20 barns on them.
My considerations for using the buildings included boat and rv the storage, doggie day care, raising game birds like pheasant for the restaurant industry , lease them out to small scale egg producers, raising replacement heifers... The turkey barns were not as new or in as nice shape so they would of been easier to scrape but that's not my style.
Good luck. Looks like a beautiful piece of property with endless possibilities.

True, the possibilities are endless. That's why I feel good if it all works out. It's just deciding on the route is the problem!
