It also depends on the breed of chicken. Some are broody more so than others. Personally, I picked breeds that seldom/rarely go broody because I want them for the eggs. I do have an incubator in case I change my mind & none of them are broody when I decide I want chicks.
What kind of chickens do you have?
The hen has to be broody, broody means when a hen want's to hatch eggs and get chicks. You can tell when she is broody when she sits on the eggs and puffs up and makes a cluck cluck sound and WILL NOT leave the nest. The egg you have is more likely not going to hatch because you don't have it with a broody hen or you don't an incubator on top of that the weather changes and it'll be too cold for the chick to survive!!
