Hello!

I recently purchased a black frizzle roo at an auction. I immediately fell in love with the "beak in a light socket look" of the feathers and knew I had to have him. It's my first frizzle so I'm not 100% sure on how their behavior should be on a daily basis. When I brought him home, he seemed to have a little runny nose. I figured it was OK and probably because of the long day of being shuffled around between warm cars, chilly outdoors and finally settling into a new home.

I decided it would be better to be safe than sorry and separated him from the rest of my chickens... rule of thumb is about 30 days before introducing from what I'm told and we haven't had any issues following this rule so I am glad we follow it. It's been about three weeks and he still has the runny nose. One side had looked a little green and was almost closed shut. I managed to clear it (with a little difficulty from my uncooperative Frizzy) with some warm water and a paper towel but it's still running. He also shakes his head pretty regularly. My husband said he is noticing him coughing. I have yet to hear that and think he might just be hearing his low call but just in case I'm hearing it wrong, I'm mentioning it here.

He's the only one in his pen area and it has a newspaper bottom so none of my other birds are showing these signs and I'm obsessed with washing my hands and arms before going any where near the other birds. Stool looks normal with no signs of blood. He's eating and drinking just like my other chickens.

My question is, any ideas on what he could have? I read on one of the blogs about adding garlic and apple cider vinegar to his water and that seemed to help ease it a little but it's still pretty bad. I'm trying to avoid a vet bill as we are currently on a pretty tight budget and the only option in this area is Cornell University ($$$$). Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!!
