Thank you everyone for your input. I couldn't see anything in the shavings or on the chicks. I cleaned the brooder out last night and put just a very light dusting of Perm. on the floor. This morning they've stopped all that excessuve scratching and head shaking...just normal stuff, and they seem just fine. They're just so darned cute!!!
I just couldn't stand the thought of mites "doing them in." I finally found a local place that could order DE for me, but it's not in yet.
