Our Indian runner duck has a swollen neck/chest and seems very dizzy. We are not sure what to do. It has been a day since we have noticed this. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry such an emergency has brought you here.

How old is the duck?

Are you new to bird keeping? It could be the crop, which is where food is stored before it's digested.

Could it have got into anything that it shouldn't have? String? Poison?

So our ducks are 3 months. We have a pen for then and I don't think they have gotten anything they shouldn't have. We are very worried. The one duck seems like he or she has no balance as it kind of falls and stumbles when trying to walk or run. We are new to this as they are our first ducks. We seemed to be doing everything right until this happened. Please help!!!

@minihorse927 , @RavynFallen , @hennible , Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Sorry mjw1079. I don't have ducks, but these folks do. Hopefully someone will chime in with some help.

Welcome! I have a few questions. What are you feeding? Do they have access to grass and other plants?

We have been feeding them frozen peas and duck starter. They do have access to grass and the yard. We have stopped the duck starter about a month ago and feed them peas corn and lettuce. Mostly peas

Sounds like an impacted crop

And they really do need starter or grower still. They aren't going to get the nutrition they need from lettuce or corn and not everything they need in peas.

So is there anything we can do to help with the impacted crop? Is the duck going to survive? How long will the recovery process take? Thanks for the help. We are a wreck worrying about this. Feel terrible for the poor duck.

Can you feel what's in the crop? Can you post a picture? Is it drinking? Is it pooping?

It's drinking minimal. No pooping. Tries to eat but seems like having a hard time swallowing. I can't tell what's in the crop but the chest neck area is very swollen. I am assuming it is peas stuck in there as I think we over fed the poor little thing. Is there anything I can do.
