Hello, my chickens have been sick so have no clue what it is And I need help badly. They are not moving as much they are kind of crouching with their head down. Sometimes they have their eyes shut as if they are sleeping. They are eating less and have started to hide from the flock although it has spread to all of them. Symptoms include runny nose, coughing, eating less, rough breathing/rales, comb and wattles have turned very pale, diarrhea colors brown red and green, egg production has came to a complete stop, and they have a very foul smell coming from the facial area. It has spread throughout the entire flock fast before I could even catch it. I have gave them vinegar, garlic, oregano, cinnamon, VET RX, scrambled eggs, cat food “for extra protein” and today I have given them a Vitamin probiotics water mix. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you post a picture of one or two sick birds? Do they any swollen eyelids or faces? It sounds like a possible respiratory disease is effecting your flock. Coryza is one disease that may cause a bad odor and respiratory symptoms (nasal drainage, cough or sneeze, and facial swelling.) Mycoplasma is also common, but without the bad odor. Coryza is treated with sulfa antibiotics, such as SMZ TMP or sulfadimethoxine.

No swollen or eyelids, I have also noticed in my younger ones that are in a separate pen have had what looks to be intestinal lining in there poop. All of them but a few have died sadly. I will post photos in a bit. One more thing I forgot to add is that they are stretching there necks, and are opening there mouths for a long period of time.

What is your state or general location? If you lose another chicken, the best way to get a diagnosis is to have your vet perform a necropsy and testing. Keep the body cold, not frozen, in a cooler or refrigerator. Call the state vet lab in your area for details, and how best to deliver the body M-F when they are open.

In the meantime, check your feed for any off-odor or color that might be mold. A few drops of water getting into a container can mold overnight. Toxic plants or chemicals/sprays in the yard could be possible. Have all of the lost birds been grown?

No, I haven’t lost any grown ones yet just chicks.

If you are losing only chicks, are they acting lethargic, puffed up or hunched, stopped eating and drinking, and having runny poops with mucus? That could be coccidiosis. Corid liquid or powder can treat it. Some cases may require sulfa antibiotics. Corid dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Change it daily, and keep their bedding clean, dry, and add new bedding often.

Could my mature chickens have this ?
