I had a hen die a couple of weeks ago. She had a severe case of mites. I did not know this until it was too late. I took all the necessary precautions after that to try and make sure it didn't happen again. I noticed a hen today that is loosing her feathers down to the skin, her breast bone is protruding and she is a whole lot less heavy than her sister. Would someone please tell me what they use for mites and what kind of a regiment that you use to treat and stop this? Also, they have not been wormed. I have Ivermectin and was wanting to know how much and how often to give them. Also, I have 3 silkies. Would you give them the same amt. as the larger chickens. Thanks One other quick question if I may. Is there anything else that I should be doing for them to keep them healthy? They have an exceptional diet with chicken feed and fruits and vegetables every day. Thanks

I have Wazine liquid wormer that I'll be giving my flock soon. They're only 2 months old and brooder/coop kept, so I don't know that they've had much exposure to warrant worming just yet.

As far as mites, I've seen poultry dusting powders for treatments and I'd also consider treating the area they frequent and doing a thorough cleaning of their coop/run.

Good luck!

Second, Ivermectin comes in two kinds pour on and drinkable form. I use Ivermectin pour on-blue liquid used for cows. A large bird I use 5 drops on the skin-not feathered area-wont work. bantams 2-3 drops...I do this once and then 6 months later. I also use DE on and in everything. I clean there nests and coops thouroughly once a week and do touch up cleaning everyday...
