Help pls. Duck hatching

I do have all the vents open sorry. All the plugs are removed.

It's ok! I was just checking. I didn't totally understand. I agree with Trisseh on your latest post too. I think that baby should be able to get out fine on his own. That looks like a plenty big enough hole.

They’re supposed to have their head tucked under their wing, probably just shifted as it was chewing etc. Did it take that shell off or did you? as long as it can breathe it’s ok. Sometimes when they’re ready but can’t quite arrange themselves properly, they start flailing and screaming, so if it’s quietly sitting there chewing and yawning, it probably still just needs more time. If you’re going to start investigating, the best thing to do is to make a hole in the air cell end to see what’s going on with the veins and things. Some people bring the egg into the bathroom with the shower running to keep the humidity up. (Don’t bring the egg into the shower itself, but having it running makes the humidity jump in the room. Lol). I don’t usually and haven’t had any issues, but if you’re concerned about the humidity, that’s one way you can keep it up outside of the incubator. Follow the assisted hatching guide, make a hole in the air cell end carefully, moisten the membrane and check for active vessels or if you can see yolk still. If you want to take a pic of it and share it, that’s fine too. Always start any assistance from the air cell, even though it’s pipped the wrong end.

Ok awesome thank you. It made 80% of that itself but hadn't rocked or moved for 18hours after. The membrane was turned dark yellow and hard looking so I just picked off the hard shell a little to make it able to breathe and since it's been way more active. Humidity is 80% pretty steadily so I wasn't too worried about that part. I dont want to keep messing with it to make a hole in the opposite end but if you think I should I will. I figured since the other 2 haven't externally pipped I wouldn't stress that one that pipped on the wrong end. I can see its alive but it's so stressful to see it struggle. On that note the other 2...someone said candle them?? I thought during lockdown I'm not supposed to move or roll them due to it making them have to reposition and tire out. It's been 49hours since lockdown so maybe another 30hours.?

I would quickly pull the other 2 and candle. But... Mist the other eggs in the incubator with warm water when you're done to get humidity back up. Do you see any yawning on the pipped ones? Sorry if I'm confused, I didn't read the whole thread yet.

When I candled before lockdown yes all 4 had internally pipped. 1 had already externally pipped (the one that's facing the wrong end) the one who broke through & is in the brooder now. The other 2 nothing externally yet??

Okiedokie thank you. The one that has been out of the shell for 9hours isnt quite dry all the way but its pecking at its siblings opening and trying to eat it's own nasty placenta!! Yikes. I want to put her in the brooder so I think I will. What do you think? Even if she isnt completely dry

Oh yes I took the fully hatched one out this morning put it in the brooder. Doing great. It was pecking at the other eggs and rolling them around

They are pekin/khaki Campbell. Or best guess at least. I have a flock of pekin and flock of khaki so not 100% but cant be any other!! Tonight is 48hours of lockdown and 27 days of incubation

Ok, I would leave your wrong end pipper alone for a bit longer then. you may wind up having to help it the rest of the way later, since it’s got a lot of shell missing and may have some trouble pushing it’s way out. Hard to say. it’s just a lot harder to see how the blood vessels are receding when they pip on the wrong end, and you don’t want to make it bleed by picking at the membrane. Personally I’d leave that one overnight and recheck it in the morning, and then potentially open up the air cell end to see what’s what. No rush as long as it’s getting air.

you can certainly candle the others to see where they’re at too; I often do, all the way through incubation. I remove the eggs I’m going to check on and put the lid right back on the bator of course, and then as MGG mentioned, you can mist everyone (except your wrong end one) to keep your humidity up when you put them back in. I do try to ensure I put them back in the way they were oriented when I took them out, although I don’t know that it makes much difference. Think of all the rolling and pushing that happens when the other babies are falling all over the eggs when they’re hatching.

If you’re concerned about them, you can always put in a safety hole in the air cell end, although that sometimes will slow them down further, and make them take even longer. But if they’re more sluggish and not really responsive when you tap on the shell, I would do safety holes to be on the safe side. Just be aware they may be even slower to hatch and take it into account when you’re looking at the time passing ever so slowly.
