HELP PLZ...chicken about to POP :’-(

Yes, when I said keel bone I was referring to the breast bone. This is a chart that helps some in estimating condition:

I will watch this thread tomorrow to see if I can help in any way. Certainly take your time in assessing her and drawing any conclusions so that you are comfortable with any decisions. See if you can get her to take any fluids.

—thank you, that’s informative as well...her kell I’d say is at a zero :( and I’ve been giving her probiotics w/her water I’m giving her via dropper, as well as antioniotics...I’m afraid she might not make it thru the night...I just don’t know

Also “Coach 723”...if I got very hardened, not normal poop material out of her is there any possibility (w/how I’ve described her condition) that there’s any further chance it might help to try to soak her & see about getting anymore out tmrw if she makes it thru the night??

It’ll help if you trim the feathers. Is the thing sticking out the keel? If so, I’d call that a -3.

I will be honest with you. If that were my chicken, I'd put her out of her misery. I have had chickens with ascites (although I'm not sure this one looks like they did), and the first couple I left to see if they would get better. They didn't. All died within a couple of days. After that, we decided to put them down when we discovered it because I don't feel that it's right to let them linger when they're suffering.

Hi there. Are you still up? Sorry about your girl. Does the swollen area feel like fluid? You may be able to drain it to provide some relief from the discomfort. This would be done with a needle and syringe. There are several videos on the internet to guide you. You would have to be careful not to drain too much, as it could put her into shock. Also, there is always risk of introducing infection. In her case, it might be worth the risk. If she responds, it might be worth trying antibiotics, as well. Sadly, she does appear to be pretty advanced invwhatever is ailing her. Please keep us posted.

I think that even if you were able to get more out, it's going to be a drop in the bucket, so to speak. If it's lash egg material, it can be very firm, not water soluble, and I think there would be risk of rupturing something in the process, not to mention the discomfort likely. I have read of cases where masses of matter were surgically removed in the case of internal laying, but they were less advanced than this. Surgery would come with a high risk also.
