Today when I came out to the coop and let the hens out, my buff Orpington walked out with her legs splayed and tipped backwards and very unsteady. She walks, but it’s an awkward waddle. Upon closer examination, her entire bum was covered in diarrhea/wet feces. I believe it could be related to the fact that we ran out of food and fed them crap for two days until I had time to get it. I put her in a warm bath for approximately 30 minutes while rubbing her abdomen and now have her resting in the coop. What else should I do? Should I take her inside? I do not feel an egg in her either.

have you felt to see if her abdomen is sort of squishy like it’s full of water? I have an elderly isa brown who has water belly and it makes her waddle when it’s time to drain her.

Her abdomen feels normal.
She also feels like she’s lost some weight. She is pooping, but it is liquidy. What else could it be? We took her inside last night and this morning she seems about the same.

How old is she? Was her vent completely blocked? You say you fed them crap for 2 days, how long have they been back on their normal feed and is she eating?

She’s 2 1/2. Her entire bottom was covered in poo.i noticed her when I was going out to give them their normal food- so this occurred immediately after not having feed for 2 days. She is eating a bit, but doesn’t seem too interested.

Poop pictures sometimes can give clues to an illness. I would separate her and put her on some vitamins for a few days. Human B complex 1/4 tablet once a day in some food, or Poultry Cell vitamins 2 ml daily would be good. Whatever vitamin, it should contain riboflavin (vitamin B2.)
She could be weak or deficient in not having proper food for a couple of days, but she may be getting sick. Reproductive disorders can be common at her age, or possible coccidiosis or worms. Did you insert a finger inside her vent to feel for an egg? A vet could examine some fresh droppings for coccidiosis or worms. Try to get her eating some wet chicken feed, and you can offer small amounts of scrambled egg, tuna, or ground meat. Are her legs weak or is one wesker or paralyzed? Does she lose balance, falling backward or to one side?

Can you clean up her bottom? Does it have an odor? I just read an article about vents getting kind of..yucky when I was looking up info for a duck.. this sounds similar.. it said to wash the area with soap and water and irrigation with syringe water. Then use betadyne to prevent germs, etc. do it for 3-4 days. Now that was a duck. But it sounds very same symptoms.

No egg when I felt for one. Her legs are splayed so she can’t stand without them splaying to the side she loses balance forward and backward
