Hi all! New here and a friend recommended I ask here. I believe my 10 1/2 months old Speckled sussex is egg bound. Starting an hour ago, she has slowly stopped walking, is wobbling when walking, has a slight clear/yellowish discharge from her vent, and is making a weird movement with her neck like she is choking. I tried giving her tums in her feed but she won't eat at all. She is also my most ravenous eater, so I know something is up. She is just coming out of her first molt, which was quite severe, but handled it like a champ. Her feathers are all pretty much grow in. Any ideas on what is up or if I am right (which I hope I am not).

Welcome to BYC, sorry your hen is not well. Can you take a video of her, upload it to youtube or vimeo, then copy and paste the link here?

An egg bound hen wouldn’t usually have discharge coming from her vent. The discharge does sound like something else- egg contents, from an egg broken inside her. I would take her to the vet and see what they can do for her.

Can you stick a finger in her vent to check for and egg?

I'm hoping to avoid the vet but will keep that in mind. Thanks!

I went to feel for an egg and got about an inch in before she pulled away. However, a small amount of blackish poop came out so I don't think she is egg bound. However, she is still walking weird but seems to have a bit more energy. I will try and feed her and see what happens. In the meantime, any thoughts?
