my 4 year old black sex link Gylfie has been laying on and off, which i’m fine with because she’s older. this morning i came outside and everyone came up to me except her. she wasn’t in her favorite spot under the bushes. i found her in the entrance to the coop, standing there puffed up with tail down. she walked out slowly and started gagging/adjusting her crop? she has feces on her feathers beneath her vent and she’s just standing in the shade now with her eyes closed and her posture sickly. i don’t want to lose her she’s the oldest hen and the first chick i raised, i know her breed is more likely to die early on but i didn’t know that when i picked her out as a chick. what could be wrong? i have pictures but they aren’t loading fast enough, i’ll post them when i have wifi :((

she just sneezed. her crop is large and squishy

the stuff that came out of her is liquid which i don’t think means impacted, possibly sour?

anyway we followed sour crop procedure. she threw up a lot of orange sour liquid and she’s sitting inside and we’re going to fast her.

BYC, if I violate any rules, pls remove.

Does it stinks? Or fermented smell? When I suspect that mine got sour crop I feed them one inch of Clotrimazole usp1% ( athletes foot cream). I feed her twice a day with a boiled egg. Do your research, you need to be sure is sour cop. Her crop will not empty at all, the liquids on it will be stinky. Also watch out for egg bound. Good luck with your girl!

thank you for the advice. we’ve had her inside for a little bit. her crop used to be huge and squishy, after she threw up it was still squishy but i’ve just checked and it’s about the size of a golf ball now with a slightly harder (but still squishy) feel. she’s been standing in the same place for about an hour. i’m fairly sure it’s sour crop because the liquid smelled sour and her crop was huge and squishy

Based on the picture that crop looks pretty big so sour crop or an impaction could be a possibility. Does it have a doughy feel?
I would keep her isolated with water, no food for now.

When did she last lay an egg? You might want to try feeling for one. If she is egg bound it’s time sensitive.

i’m guessing she hasn’t laid much because she’s older, as before this she looked healthy despite simply not laying anymore, like our welsummer. i’m always on the lookout for her & our other black sex link because i know they’re prone to egg problems because of their breed
she’s doing a lot better now! we had to make her throw up and the smell basically confirmed it was sour crop. her crop is smaller than a golf ball and firmer now so we’re working on massaging that down until she can pass it. everything’s looking up and it looks like she’s feeling a lot better now 😊
