That looks like a collapsed egg membrane. A little of the cloaca is visible. I would try to gently pull the membrane out. If you can get it out, she may pass the rest of the egg, or it had already come out. What are you feeding her, and does she have crushed oyster shell available to supplement her calcium?

THANK YOU SO MUCH I’ll try and pull it out gently in a warm bath

I feed her nromal eggs layer pellets and a mix of sunflower seeds and corn
They get grit and treats occasionally

I don’t have any oyster shell on hand

This hen lays very large eggs bless her
Do you think I should try and remove it and let her sit in a small covered cage for a while to prevent her from laying too soon?

If she is prolapsed when you pull the egg membrane out, I would try to push it back inside. If that doesn’t work keep any red prolapsed tissue moist with honey or a mild oil. A half of a calcium tablet or Tums might be good to give her a dose of calcium to help harden her shells. To temporarily stop her from laying, you would need to keep her in the dark for 16 out of every 24 hours at least for several days.

Thank you once more.
Would you recommend placing her in the dark for say 3 days to prevent her from laying for a while.
The vent didn’t look prolapsed but I’ll take the advice on board. I’ll buy some oyster shell and calcium tablets.
How would I feed her the tablet?
