Today one of our hens who is 4 yrs old, had a prolapsed membrane. We took her in to wash the area, and tried to push it back in. With no luck, it still came out. We put prep H around the opening. My husband noticed that there is also an egg, it will not come out. The egg is not broken. We fear she will die if the egg is still in her. What should we do? Do we take the chance and make a small cut to get the egg out? In the meantime, I'm going to put her in warm water, and try to get the egg out the best I can. Your help in much appreciated. If the vet is our only option, we will go. I'm trying to upload a picture at the moment, if I could figure it out.

Not sure what membrane you're seeing. Is it part of her body or the soft shell membrane of a faulty egg? I would not cut into her without some serious knowledge of chicken anatomy. The incision they give women in childbirth is not equatable to cutting into a chicken's vent area and it could cost her life. If you have the info on hand, it may be worth doing, but asides from that I'd steer clear.

A photo may help, but the vet may end up being needed. For assisting with causing contractions dried raspberry leaf tea is very effective, it's been a lifesaver with many female animals (and even humans), and raw cold pressed olive oil orally or rectally can help shift things, though any lube being applied should help.

Best wishes with her.
