Sorry for your loss. We all may experience health problems in our hens eventually. Mine are mostly old hens 7-9 years, and I lose 2-3 a year to reproductive disorders, such as internal laying, egg yolk peritonits, ascites or cancer. The way I know is that I do a necropsy on most when they die, and look at their organs. It is a good way to learn about diseases, and gives some closure.

Your hen who is not getting off the roost may have a reproductive issue or a crop problem. I would remove her, and give her an exam. Feel of her crop and describe if it is empty or full, hard or puffy. Feel between her legs to see if her lower belly is enlarged or swollen, hard or soft. Look her over for lice or mites under her vent and on her skin. Try getting her to eat a little scrambled eggs and a small amount of watery chicken feed. Do you have any electrolytes and vitamins to give her?
