HELP! Pullet "not feeling well"!

i just got back from the man i bought them from and he gave me some sulphur stuff that he uses. he said to boil some rice and rinse it really well then add some of the sulphur to it and hand feed it to her. he uses rice because it holds moisture and gives the bird some liquid. i fed her several pieces by making her put them in her beak and then gave her several droppers full of water. she wasn't very happy about it at all, but i feel better knowing she had something in her! he said to feed some of the rice to the others too to dose them and do do it every other day for about 3 times. he said she should perk up after eating it a couple of times. he said he's used it on many of his chicks and he's been raising them for over 40 years!

she has been peeping more in the last 30 mins or so. he looked at her good and felt her over and smelled her and said it looks like a mild case of coccidis? (sp?) i trust him since he has like 100 chickens at his place and has been raising them so long!!! he's super knowledgeable! the feed store here (the only one for about 25 miles) was out of corid so i called him and he said bring her right over! :)

Sulpha is used to treat coccidiosis, so I hope it works for you. Happy to hear that you have someone close that can help.

Sulpha, I'm guessing Sulmet, will only treat one strain of cocci. There are at least 7 so it's very hit and miss with that drug. I would try to find Corid somewhere and start her on that as soon as you can. Mix it up and give it to her with a dropper every couple of hours for the first day or two until she's feeling better and drinking on her own. Coccidiosis is lethal and the longer she has it the more damage she will have to her intestines until she cannot survive any longer so I hope the sulfa works for you. I now keep Corid on hand so I loose no time if there's a coccidiosis outbreak.

Sulmet, used as directed, treats two in chickens and two in turkeys. What I would like to know is if it treat more strains if given at higher doses.

Cafarmgirl, I agree, Corid would be the better choice.

well, all is good. she would not eat any of the rice, just kept spitting it out when i would put a piece in her mouth. i finally mixed a little of the sulfa with water and gave her several drops every 30 mins all day. by the next morning she was perked back up and running around the box! she was pecking the litter like crazy and so i gave her a bowl of feed and she ate the whole thing. we watched her through out that day and by dinner time she was peeping away as if she was crying out for the others. we moved her back outside with the flock and she has been back to normal with normal poops!!!

i spent a good part of the next day cleaning their coop, feeder and waterer and let them out to free range. she ran around with the other girlies like normal and all has been fine since!!!

i did dose the other girlies the day he gave me the sulfa with the rice mix and they ate it up and i have now added ACV with their water. i gave them a break from the sulfa the next day and mixed a little with the feed yesterday. none today, some tomorrow and then i think i'll be done! i have checked thru all the litter and hay in the coop that i cleaned out and all poop is looking normal! i can't believe how fast an illness can hit and how fast a recovery can come with these guys!!!

Tiny MoMo is all better it seems! THANK YOU for all the help!!!
