Hello. My 7 month old Production Red from Meyer seems to have three issues that all started just over a week ago. All of these issues have caused her to be relatively docile and not leave the coop to free range. We have quarantined her from the other birds.

First, her one eye seems to be swollen shut. It is white and looks like the discoloration is on the outside of the eye, and not inside the eyelid. We did not notice any blood so I assume this is not a contusion from a peck from another bird. Second, her comb is not as erect as usual and looks a little floppier than usually. Finally, it appears she has vent gleet. We have given her a pro-biotic yogurt the past few days, put a little apple cider vinegar in her water, and have soaked/cleaned her vent every few days. The vent gleet seems to be getting better, but she essentially shows no sign of being more active and the eye and comb does not look any better. I am not against butting a bird out of its misery to prevent suffering, but I feel like all 3 of these things to happen at once have to be linked to a root cause that may be fixable.

Thanks!!!

I see a slightly messy vent, but no obvious signs of vent gleet. The swollen eye might be a peck injury, but sometimes can be a symptom or a respiratory sinus infection, especially if you see eye bubbles. I would open it and apply an antibiotic eye drop or ointment twice a day. If you see pus or gunk, clean the eye before applying the drops/ointment. If you see sneezing or coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing, you may want to get some Denagard online and treat for MG.
