Help!! Pullets sick!!! Bloody droppings...Sulmet isn't working!!

Hi, I have bit of an emergency and I'm hoping that there is someone out there that can help me. I had a pullet die on July 11 from Coccidiosis. I had started Sulmet the day before on July 10. The Sulmet doesn't seem to be working. What should I do? There are still bloody, wormy droppings every morning. The vets won't help..they say they won't treat chickens. I'm freaking out because I can't bear to lose another one. They aren't acting sick but the droppings are really bad. I don't want to keep giving them Sulmet but I don't know what else to do.

I don't know whether they have cocci or not, but if you are seeing worms, they have worms, which Sulmet does not treat. I would start with Wazine, then treat with ivomectin. Here is a good thread on treating worms:

Coccidiosis is a bacteria; you can't see a bacteria without a microscope. Most likely what you are seeing is roundworms, and Wazine will kill them. But they almost surely have other types of worms, so you need to do the ivomectin as well.

Wazine 17 or 34%? I'm not sure anymore if it is cocci either. If it was cocci they would be dead already, right? The worms are barely noticable, they are very small and you cant even see them unless you are really inspecting the droppings. The blood worries me though. I guess I'm going to have to buy whatever I need to get online because my local co-op only carries chicken feed...nothing else. I'm very worried that it wont get here in time.

Yep - cecal worms cause bloody droppings from irritating the cecum.

Use wazine the first time. Then in 2-4 weeks please go back and worm with ivermectin, fenbendazole, or levamisole. DO NOT USE THOSE LATTER WORMERS FIRST! If you do, it could cause clogging and/or shock and death in the birds.

Your birds are heavily infested with worms. Using a wormer stronger than wazine could harm them. Wazine will paralyze adults worms but not the larvae. That's why it's important to go back after the wazine has done its job and worm with ivermectin, which not only paralyzes but kills worms AND roundworm larvae so you don't have a continuous process of re-infestation as the larvae change to adults and reinfect the flock.

Also, I'd consider environment. If you're keeping your birds on soil, I'd consider putting a layer of sand down (2 inches) because it helps dessicate worm eggs and make them a little less likely to infect.

So recap:

Wazine 17 (piperazine 17%) in the water for 1-2 days (as labeled). Don't eat eggs for 2 weeks (which you probably wouldn't want to anyway).
In 2-4 weeks then worm with fenbendazole, levamisole, or (best choice) Ivermectin (pour on, injectable given orally, or paste)

Please let us know if you need a dosage if you choose ivermectin for the follow up wormer.

Okay thank you!! I keep them in a bare ground coop but I layer hay over it, rake it out every morning and put fresh hay out. We are working on a new winter coop now, but I keep them very dry and clean. I am going to the neighboring county's co-op to check for the Wazine. Crossing my fingers that they have it!!!
