HELP! Puppies attacked new hen (*pictures)

Look like a hen to me. The wounds look pretty superficial. Keep an eye for signs of internal injuries. Puppies trying to play can be rough but nothing like a dog trying to kill.

I’d say keep spraying with Vetericyn or the like. Any scabbing I’d put a little antibiotic ointment on. If she’s fairly new she may not be laying and the stress from the attack could set her back too. If she keeps progressing the way she is I’d say she’d be fine laying eggs. Make sure others don’t peck where feathers are trying to come in.

I think she’ll be fine.

An update for anyone facing similar circumstances in the future that may reference this thread:

Pepper is alive and well! She made a full recovery, and was back out with the rest of the flock in less than a week. Chickens truly are very resilient creatures!!

If this were to happen again I think I would handle it similarly:
  • Isolate chicken
  • Full body inspection for wounds
  • Wash & disinfect wounds
  • Spray wounds with bluekote (day 1 only)
  • Keep chicken separate from rest of flock until acting normal (at least overnight)
  • Offer plenty of water and crumbles during recovery
  • Add Nutridrench and VetRx to water
  • Clean wounds at least once daily, spray with Veterycin after cleanings
  • If feathers missing and pink flesh/wounds exposed after returning to flock, spray exposed flesh with bluekote again so that flock mates do not peck at exposed area (bluekote usually stains skin/wound dark purple for at least 2 weeks)

Thanks again to everyone for the advice, Pepper and I really appreciated it!!
