Yes. I would often take him out to rest in my hand rather than the incubator because the others were stepping on him

Chickens don't show pain. They hide it. If that was actually his brain exposed, I'd have culled immediately. It's not like it was going to get better. Still, I'm sorry you lost the chick. it's hard when you didn't cause the problem, and can't fix it. Sending you supportive thoughts.
