help quail chicks!!!!!

X2

Sydney Quailman, do your chicks know where the feed is? Quail chicks are not all that smart and unless feed is sprinkled all around them right after hatch, they don't figure out where to access feed.

I agree. I was so paranoid they wouldn't find the feed i sprinkled it on the ground for the first 2 weeks.

i trained mine with the probe on my thermometer, i taped a few bristles from my dust brush on it and they follow it around like crazy. i just tap it into the feed and the water and they followed. they also sleep next to it :)

hi all had another 5 pass away during the night,

run down of events.

1 incubator was open from the box and used straight away
2 temp during the incubation period went from 100-102f humidty was 50s
3 most chicks were born healthy
4 brooder is a larger cardboard box which i got from local hardware. just dusted it out.
5 brooder has large holes on top and mesh panel to hang heater from or on top when they get older,

6 beeding is towel
7 water has marble stone stop them from drowning
8 feed is chick starter crumble, suitable for all game and poultry from days old to 7 weeks ( non medicated)
this what i have done this morning

1 covered the holes above brooder with towels , left middle open where heater hangs from.
2 temp gauage on the floor under heater reads between 95-97f
3 i used a blender to grinder the crumble into fine powder
4 i have moved heater more to one side and the feed and water to the other side, grinded feed is just placed on the floor.
5 i change water daily
6 room temp between 65-70f
7 the hay used from my farm , i have since removed it. and using bathroom towel.
not sure what else i can do.

any suggestions?

Sounds like you are doing a great job. I would not cover your brooder holes with a towel though. What's your outside temps at the moment? I don't work in F can you covert for me. I use turkey starter by riverina. It's non medicated and high in protein. Add the vitamins if you have not already. Mine also love some mashed up egg too.

that sucks! sounds like your doing everything right, mine seem really hardy. are the rest of them huddled under light or running around box?

Yes, do not cover the top with a towel. Let the heat escape and air to move. If you are doing all the things suggested here and still losing chicks, it could possibly be from the high temps you had in the incubator. Not only did it affect their feet and legs, but it could have done some other internal damage. I am so sorry you are having these problems.

ok i have removed the towels from the top, i have spread food around the brooder, some are huddled and some are running around the brooder, but usually they are running around and feeding.

its real heart breaking to wake up in the morning and find dead chicks.

im working today, my wife and boys will keep a close eye on them.

its about 22-24degrees in the garage.
