Hey everyone,
One of my coturnix quail is having a hard time getting up when she lays on her side. She kicks the air and I’ve only seen her get up once on her own but that was only because I came close to her and she panics. Usually she can’t do it alone and I have to help her. She seems to be able to walk ok though. What is wrong with her? Is it old age? She is around 2 years old.

Is there a chance she hit her head?
What are you feeding her?
Is she eating and drinking?
Does her poop look normal?

Two years old is old, but not necessarily end of life old for a quail, so I'm suspecting injury or feed. She looks fairly alert and I don't see obvious signs of disease.

she hit her head around 4 months ago but hasn’t had any problems since then until now. Do you think they’re related. I feed her kelly’s game bird feed and i mix in some oyster shells, I’ve been doing that for most of her life. She also seems to be eating and drinking ok. I’ll check to see what her poop looks like though

I suspect feed! What feed are you feeding and are you feeding any grains?
It’s Kelley’s branded and it says on the bag that it’s meant for turkeys but the people at my local store told me it works for quail too and I’ve been feeding it to them for a long time with no problems

Is it the starter, developer or breeder?
I just looked it up on their website!

It’s the flock builder in crumble form.
It's only 20% protein, which will 'maintain' the bird but isn't an optimal feed. Can't find any ratio's on any of the essential vitamins or minerals.
One thing I did notice is they use wheat in their feeds....could be she has a case of Ergot poisoning?
Feed manufactures don't 'test' for Ergot when a shipment of grain comes in, usually just moisture content, so they don't overpay for the grain.

Does she 'flop' around like having seizures?

She doesn’t flop around but I know the food isn’t specifically for quail. Any recommendations for a better feed?
