Help repairing bear-damaged coop--what to do with bloody ground?

I see, said the blind man....as he picked up his hammer and saw...lol. Thank you so much for posting that. It truly helps because I really did not intend to run the electric wire around the coop. Now I will definitely take that step.

Think I will still screw down hardware cloth over all my coop windows as well. Just another layer of defense on top of the electric wire.

Okay, so you still have your fattest hen! Hurray! One silver lining in this I suppose. Hope you enjoy your new chicks that are coming, and thanks again for the information. Becky

Oh goodness, we have another similarity then. Our road(private, bordering state land)is also a favorite go-to for people that are abandoning their dogs. Really upsets me as there is a big Humane Society office/kennel located no more than a mile away from us once you get out on the highway. Also, a no kill shelter in the next town over. There is NO excuse for people to act like their animals are trash to be discarded. I've rescued a couple of dogs in the six years we have been here, and who knows how many have not visited our property that are running around.

I really think that once our chickens are here we will have more problems with our neighbors dogs though. I've seen them in our woods doing their business, so if there are chickens here I'm sure that will be just another reason to visit.

We have lots of reasons for that electric fencing, don't we!? Becky

we already have the electric fence around the pen, and we keep the feeder inside the coop and the extra is locked inside a storage building inside of a very tightly sealed metal trash can. So sorry what happened to you that's awful!

Call you state game warden, they will help out with the bear problem. Depending on your state they might even provide you with an electric fence to help protect your new flock of chickens.
