OK, I can't have roosters or hens where I am. I've had chickens for 3 years and my neighbors are fine with it. Well I'm doing my friend a favor and keeping a rooster overnight. Well he's been quiet until now - he just woke us up crowing. We have him in a bathroom under the vanity in our guest bathroom in a shipping box. He has a down blanket around 3 sides. How likely is it that he can be heard by neighbors from inside my house? I, of course, can't fall back asleep now. I put music on in the bathroom - I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing. I have to keep him quiet for 3 more hours. Help!

That of course doesn't seem to be the case for this guy. He crowed in a totally silent, dark room. He's been at my house for 12 hours now without a peep, it was 5 am that set him off.

Sounds like he has a great internal clock.

I keep my roo in a dog crate in the garage at night. No one outside the house can hear him when he crows at 5 am.
If they hear anything at all, it sounds like it is coming from far away and the direction is ambiguous at best.
Since we live a few hundred feet from the city line, it's all good. The country roosters get the blame for my guy's night time crowing and my neighbors are cool with his daytime comments. "He's the quietest rooster - we never hear him in the morning till after 8!". Although, if he gets too noisy during the day, I will put him back in the garage. (My neighbors are from the 'big city' and are nice, but they can only tolerate just so much 'country noise' before they complain to animal control.)

I doubt anyone outside your home can hear him very well, if at all. If you were in an apartment or duplex, that would be a different story. It was probably a sound from outside that set him off - or someone snoring.

If anyone asks, you can always say "But I don't Own a rooster!"

i have 4 serama roos in the spare bedroom upstairs in 4 breeding pens and boy do thay get loud but you can hardly hear them right outside the house. i live in the sticks on 10 ancers of land and my outside roo dont react to the crowing coming from in the 100 year old house
