Agree with the above, although you might need to wrap it (carefully!) if the birds won't leave it alone. And maggots are a very big issue!

Okay, I will keep a close eye on him, and make sure the others aren't pecking at it. I'll make sure it stays nice and clean too.
He's sleeping in the garage tonight. He needs to be in there anyway, because the neighbors don't like him crowing early in the morning . But I thought it would be good to give his leg a little time to heal before he goes back anyway.
