Hi,
I've lost 4 chickens to avian malaria in the last year, and so when my current rooster suddenly couldn't walk, I suspected the same prognosis, and waited for the worse. I've learnt the hard way there's absolutely nothing to be done to help victims of malaria.
It's been 4 days now since he first couldn't walk. Strangely, he does seem to be walking a bit more than he was at first, although still on his hocks. He is bright and active, and eating/drinking well. He does have a little fluorescent green poop.
As much out of desperation as anything else, I've been feeding him wood ash mixed in with his food (in the hopes of flushing toxins out of his system).
If this isn't malaria, what else could it be?? And, how else can I help him?
My other chickens who died of malaria were lucky to last a day or two. He doesn't appear to have the crumbly crop symptoms that the other malaria chickens had when death was near.
Any thoughts very much appreciated.
