HELP! Roosters Legs Badly Injured... graphic photos - BEWARE!

I kept a rooster in the house for sixth months.... this is how I did it... I got a dog excersize pen.... I put down Heavy.. and I do mean heavy plastic or a tarp (to protect the floor) and then Cardboards...lots of cardboards... and then pellets.... (I made him a stall... I would let him out only onto the linolium and pergo... He did very well... I did take him outside to freerange. I would recommend making a square with lumber and wrapping your tarp under it so you have a lined "box"... that will keep the litter in it's place and then a refrigerator box (s) or dryer box (s) for absorsion and then the dry den bedding... clean it like you would a stall. He will need a roost that goes across a corner so he can go to bed.

He is a beautiful rooster. I wounder if you should maybe give him a course of antibotics for a few weeks to help with infection and clean the area and put antibiotic ointment over his leg, eg. polysporin ointment or the no name which is basically the same.

sounds good.

it looks like his circulation got cut off.it may not have got cut off completly so there might be a chance of keeping some toes.feel his toes,if they are cold they are probably dead.
cleaning his legs daily is important.scrub his legs thoroughly.if the area is dead it will not hurt him and if he reacts then its a good sign.you will see blood around the edges of the area when it starts to heal and where there is circulation.bright red blood is a good sign.he needs some kind of oral antibiotic to keep that infection from his bloodstream.keep the dead parts peeled off as often as possible to allow air and healing to proceed.you need to do antibacterial cleaner and neosporin on those at least twice a day.CLEAN...CLEAN.....CLEAN.as long as you can keep the infection out of his blood stream the rest will heal.

I had the same thing happen to a top hat roo who got lot durring a snowstorm. The foot looked the same. The blisters eventually drained and he seemed to be getting better , than he got worse and had black streaks on his legs. I figured it was blood poisoning and put him down, he was suffering too much.

What are some anti-biotics that I can give orally? What are the best ones to use?

Thank you for all of your comments! What a great name for your rooster, Geebs - My rooster, too, has been crowing quite a bit... He tries to stand and then crows!

I am going right now to check out chickenzoos website! Thank you Chickenzoo for the information

I think your best bet is pennicillin, but that will require injections. The oluy oral antibiotic I can think of that I would expect to be strong enough for that much infection is baytril, and that would require a vet's prescription.

What a gift you are!!! THANK YOU for the information. I will order some today!

Do you ever make diapers for other peoples chickens?

I saw your very cool website! We have horses (mini's) and goats, too :) Love them :) All your critters are beautiful! I love those little black and white pinto goats :) Your mini appaloosa stallion looks like my Sunshine. He is a chestnut blanketed appy
