My 8 year old Black Australorp has tiny things crawling up and down her leg. She's been acting weird and walking crooked for a while now. I've checked her before and seen nothing. Today she was laying in the sun then got up and went into the shade and started biting at her leg when I saw them. Is it scaly leg mites? Help please!

Usually scaly leg mites are under the scales of the legs. You might be seeing lice. You need to get a poultry safe dust or spray for them. I have never had this problem so maybe someone else knows a specific product that works best. Usually your local feed store should carry something to take care of it tho

When were your chickens last cleaned out and deloused?

I would delous the huts and the chickens, if your bird has horrible feet by which i mean, the scales coming off the leg, then you need to rub with vaseline, baby oil or motor oil on the feet to drown the mites.

Hope this helps!

Okay, jeez. We ended up dusting (with permethrin) all 3 hens, cleaning out and burning all the straw in the chicken house, dusting the chicken house, and putting shavings that we currently use for the chicks in our garage in instead. We'll replace the shavings with more shavings (unless someone has a better suggestion) in a week. Made my broody hen real upset but there were mites in the nest and on her. We also put olive oil on the 8 year old's legs just in case of leg mites even though her legs aren't scaly. Anything we missed???? Now I guess we need to build a nest box or two because she was nesting on top of the straw bale.

Thank you for suggestions previous and yet to come!
