HELP!!Scary problem!! Any Advice?

No, I didn't think they would. We're in the same type of area ourselves.

But if you report it to the local authorities (like sherriff's office) you're better off if something goes really wrong (burglary, destruction of property, outbuildings, house, injury to animals, family members).

I'm not trying to scare you. We didn't report the first time some one messed with our mail box. When we reported the second incident, which was stolen mailboxes left at the end of our drive, the sherriff was upset that we hadn't reported the first incident. We called the post office but they just told us to contact the sherriff.

The third time, some mail boxes from down the road were stolen and destroyed and the debris left at the end of our drive by the road. These incidents all happened within 3 weeks.

We have a great guardian dog, but I'm thankful our property is completely fenced, as I don't know how far he would have chased them as they left our property. And I wouldn't want to see him injured.

We put extra security lights on our property facing the drive, the street and the outbuildings. At least if someone is out there in the night, we can see them. We haven't had any problems since.

Barrel bolts keep things closed, not locked and secure. I think changing the locks is a step in the right direction.

wischickenlover...Oh PLEASE be carefull....sounds like someone is really messing with your mind, I would be scared to death! Do you have any family members close, that could maybe sneak in later in the evening, and stay the night? That way when you leave in the morning, whoever is doing this wont know they are there, and might be able to be caught. DO NOT let them use a gun tho....Ohhhh, thats scarey as well. Pictures work just as well...when it comes to the police getting thier "burglar" PLease....BE SAFE! I wish you the best of luck!

wischickenlover I am so sorry this is happening to you. Putting padlocks on the coop and kennel are definitly good ideas.

Is there anyone who can loan you a cam corder? If you have access to a web cam that is another option. Some web cam's are very cheap.I found a refurbished one at Amazon.com for $15.oo. Or maybe a loan from a friend or family member?

Good luck and keep us posted.

wischickenlover, Is it possible the barrel bolts are being jarred open by the dog jumping against the doors? If your dog Gets his open by jumping againt it, maybe he then jumps till the other opens. Just a thought.

I can't imagine anyone getting kicks out of leaving animals and birds out of their pens.

Please let us know how things turn out.

Maybe tie a rope around the doors to add a extra lock and see if they stay closed or not.

Very anxious to hear how things are going once you get the true locks out. I, for one, would be freaked the heck out!!!

Stay safe!!! Hope it IS something as simple as the dog jarring the doors.

Raccoons can operate barrel locks, but if that were the case, you would have seen a bunch of dead chickens and a raccoon certainly wouldnt have let out the dog! For that matter, I cant see a stranger or criminal letting out the dog, either. Maybe you have some nut from P*** (the forbidden P word) setting your animal "free". Some folks dont realize that the chickens are safer inside the pen then outside.
Living as rural as you do, it probably isnt a homeless person stealing eggs. Could it be neighborhood kids being mischievous?

keep us up to date and be careful

wischickenlover, hope the locks will stop the mischief, and that it is only that. Even so, report it to the local law, if nothing else to have them be aware of the problem.
I would be freaked out if it was me, since I too am in a rural setting.
Please take no chances and and stay safe.
Keep us posted.

I too would put a bug in the local police's ear. And invest in a good BIKE lock.Yes I did say a bike lock because you can't saw through some of them...I put one on my coop for Halloween so noone would let my birds out.
If it was a predator, your birds would be goners. I think it's a predator of the two footed kind.

I didnt read all the replies, but it does sound like something that an animal activist would do. I have heard several stories of the same nature, as well as things like this happening at fairs. This is something that I would give great thought too. Hope you figure out what is going on.

Praying that you, your family, dog, and flock stay safe. I too would let the local police/sheriff know what is going on. Be careful! Ask your not so close neighbors if they may have saw any strange cars/trucks. Just a thought.
