My 8 wk old ducks are still sleeping inside at night b/c the temps are inconsistent. I walked them to their outside run this morning, they went into their pool to wash off the overnight nasty. I decided to help my Runner Gabby since she had poop on her bill. When I splashed at her and grabbed at her bill (that I've done before btw), she acted like she went into a seizure or heart attack. She froze up, legs pulled into her body, head turned backwards. I picked her up quickly and held her. I thought she was going to die in my arms. Eventually she got back to normal and is now completely normal acting. So what happened????? Did I scare her into a seizure or heart attack? I feel horrible! :hit

Probably scared her even though you have done it before.

What are your temps? I got mine out last weekend and it is so great! My temps were not consistent either. As long as they are out of the wind. They will be fine.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely scared her - poor thing.. Scared me too!!! I was thinking the cold water first thing combined with me splashing may have caused it. We've had temps 50s and down to 30s at night - just won't stay consistent. I think it's supposed to be consistent starting mid next week - they'll be going out permanently soon.

Heart attack happen when we give too much energetic feed to the birds that their system can't handle ..already chickens heart runn so fast about 250 per min .. Heart attacks comes suddenly and the only sign is bird moving abnormally on his back and die there's no cure

She has ducks. ;)

What type of set up do you have outside?
Yeah, I let my pool warm up a bit in the sun before I offered it to the ducklings. ;)
I have a short stock tank in their run - maybe the water was too cold. They may just have to keep the night nasty on them for a few hours in the morning until the water warms some. That was devastating to watch!

I’ve had the same thing happen to a couple of my ducklings. Never my adults. I believe they aren’t getting enough vitamins while their nervous systems are still forming. Both of my ducklings had seizures (what you described above) when they got suddenly overstimulated. In my case it was flipping on lights and sudden banging of doors. Can you start giving them some liquid poultry vitamins? It should get better. And yes it is so scary.
