HELP!! Severe Injury!! Graphic pics!

Ya know they came here asking for help for a reason, not everyone has an avian vet in their area i know i don't and putting a bird under anasthesia is risky buisness no matter what the reason, plus the shots they give to numb the area cause more swelling and pain later on that the injury itself, this is treatable at home and they have already been given some good advise

I've lived on a farm and i rearly seek out vets for help unless it is the last resort and it's not because i can't afford it, it's because not everything requires a vet and taking an animal from it's home that is already stressed from an injury can kill it quicker than the injury alone.

I mean you no disrespect but you make it sound like they don't care.

I second that. I used superglue on a hen that was attacked by a hawk. Worked great.
I've gone to vets with chickens, 4 times, did not help. The avian vet would not even see chickens. I have names for him but its a family forum.

Give myself shots . You ever run a needle into your finger to get blood for a test....how many IV have you had, myself many...so think about it ...talkin about a needle in the skin, not a major operation. Its not into the muscle even.

Yes could use both stiches and glue.

There is only one vet around here who will take in poultry and she really knows her stuff.

Unfortunately that is not the case for most areas. I had this experience with a sprained wing at the Fair. There were four vets on call and none of them really knew poultry or could help me.

Taking them to a vet is not usually an available option for poultry, so it is generally best not to mention it and just offer up some friendly advice and encouragement for dealing with the situation. When someone asks what to do for their birds it is often because a vet is not an available option.

I remember years ago helping my aunt stitch up a gosling that had ripped almost the full length of its' neck on something. It made a full recovery with no problems. Even today, the closest avian vet to me is at LSU Vet center in Baton Rouge - a full 2 hour drive away. So a lot of the time, I'm on my own with my poultry, but I try to use my common sense and intuition and do what I feel is in the best interest for the animal.

I've both stitched up animals and set broken bones for people who would not take them to the vet. I didn't want to see a bullet put through them for something I knew I could fix. So I fixed it.

I would lather the area with neosporin and orajel, make sure the tongue is in his mouth, and stitch shut. I always use fishing wire for stiching as it stretches and it's easy to take out after healing. After surgery, lather the neck/wound in more neosporin. Just keep him separated and make sure to keep a close eye on it. In about 7-10 if it is healed, gently remove stitches. Good luck!

I've used super glue and New Skin on chickens bfore, so i should assume it is safe for Peafowl. It will also be easier on the bird than stitching it up will be.

Use a pair of tweesers to pull the toungue through and hold it up and have a helper close the hole up. Be sure to apply some antibittic to the wound before you close it, so you aren't sealing in the bad stuff.

hey everyone thanks for the great advice. I put some neosporin on it and closed the wound with butterfly bandages, but tomorrow I will try to stitch it up and get some liquid skin to put on it.

Thanks again.
