Thank you mama24 for your observations, i will go and look up blue copper marans.

DMRippy thank you for sharing your lovely pictures, i am going to check out the blue copper marams, i too know very little about the marans but hope to learn more from here.

aoxa Thanks again for all your help, here in uk i am allowed to keep cocks, but if anyone complains about the noice i will be asked to get rid of them. As we speak there is possibly 3 or 4 roos from chicks i have hatched, i really only want to keep 1 for my flock and to hatch some eggs from in the spring, at the moment it looks likely that i will keep my super sweet light sussex Romeo. It will be very hard for me to rehome the others as i love all my flock, my hens and chicks give me so much enjoyment.

I know exactly how you feel. So it is a noise ordinance that you have to abide by?

I do not have any noise ordinance but according to my village, I am considered residential, which did not state in the village bylaws is prohibited from keeping chickens. If someone were to complain, I could lose them. I am prepared to move. That's how unlikely I am to give up ANY of my birds.

I will fight it. I want to move come summer 2012. I want farm land!

Right now I only have an acre. I would love to have much, much more.

Yes aoxa, it is more of a noise order we have to abide by, chickens are allowed and so are cocks but if anyone complains about the noise i might have to get rid of them.
My dream has always been to own a farm with land so i could fullfil my dream of having all the animals i want, maybe 1 day lol.

Any silkie experts out there that can help me sex the silkies?

i'm going to guess on the silkies based on the combs 1st cockerel and 2nd pullet
the splash is a cockerel although it could be a blue copper instead. the bcm is a pullet and yes that coloration is normal, just hope that it goes away as it grows and is only around the neck. i have pics of my bcm but dont have them up here now. a cockerel at 7 weeks would have a much larger comb and very red wattles. although since you have gotten 2 very different colored chickens from supposidly bcm eggs i would bet that they have another color(s) mixed into them although they are (at least appear) pure marans

Thanks to those that pointed out my splash could well be a blue copper marans, i have looked it up and he deffinately looks exactly like the blue copper marans i have seen on the net today.
From what i know the person i purchased the hatching eggs from did indeed have different colours of marans which he said were kept seperate in their own areas, but maybe he had some jump the fence into a different pen lol. I did contact him when i hatched the different colour marans but he never made contact back.
Oh well no big deal as i only keep my birds for my own enjoyment and their eggs and it's quite nice to have a variety of different breeds and colours.
