So my family and I would like to put together a pen with just one breed in it. Our other coop is all our hens and roo. We have been looking through pictures and magazine and have decided between the two breeds, Silver Sebright or Phoenix. We love the Sebright cause its looks and I think it is just a beautiful bird. While for the Phoenix, when I first saw pics they blew my mind. I thought they were so beautiful with their tails. So. The thing is that I live in Wasilla Alaska. I am planning on getting whichever breed i decide on around the time it comes to start tilling our garden which is in late April /May. Has anyone ever raised these chickens/bantams? And which is hardier and which is easier to raise?

Thanks!

I think the Sebrights are the prettiest bird I have seen since finding out I was interested in chickens!! The wing that points downward reminds me of a soldier at attention!

Well based on my sebrights I've had I would not get them! I had a roo that would try'n KILL ya if you were out there! But, the hens can be pretty nice and tame! But, that was JUST my roo! I bet there are some good nice and tame sebright roos out there! That was just MY roo! The phoenix are BUEATIFUL birds! I just love their tails! thechickengoesRAWR has a point! I'd go with the SILKIES! I just love them!

Phoenixes ARE mean. and NOT good with cold. and they don't lay any eggs. all they are is pretty. so try silkie or orps or if you want something pretty try Ameraucana bantams or sebrights.

Thanks for the info you guys! Sooo I slapped myself this morning cause I looked thru the Murray McMurray Magazine and now I have another choice:rolleyes:. The Phoenix are off my list so now the new one's are: Porcelain D'uccle, Silver Grey Dorking, or Blue Laced Red Wyandotte's. I love the porcelains color but never met anyone who raised them or breed's them. I gave a dorking chick to a friend of mine who grew up to be a very nice looking rooster. And I have a wyandotte in my coop and i just love their tempermant and I personally think that there body shape is different.
Anyone ever raise one of these breeds?

Thanks!

I've heard it's almost impossible to get a Phoneix's tail to grow really long.. It almost needs to be caged all by itself. Also, they're flighty nervous birds.
