Help, Sick 6 old month Roo

I wonder if those are tiny, almost microscopic sized, blood sucking bugs? With him burying his head in things his comb/wattles must be itching or hurting severely.

I do not know, but wonder if you could use some kind of baby wipe and try to “wash/rub” off whatever that is? At the very least maybe spray some Vetricyn on the affected areas or rub some on.

I so hope he gets better. I hate to see such a sweet cockerel in such misery. Now mine, on the other hand, are not miserable. They dish out the misery.
I have some gentle hand wipes so will have a go this evening to try and clean him up a bit and see how it looks afterwards - Thank you

Can you post a different photo of the comb?

Turning ashy, he may have a fungal infection which usually can be treated topically with an anti-fungal cream (athlete's foot cream). But if it's Fowl Pox, then you don't want to disturb the scabs, since that can cause it to spread.

Off to take more pics now.

I would hesitate to say that he seems ever so slightly better at the moment, just went down to check on him again and saw him scratching around for bugs in the ground and the food I left for him earlier (the soup) is all gone! Fingers crossed - he is on the mend:fl

I have put a ring of homemade mosquito catchers (The sugar & Yeast in a bottle types) around the run and they are catching quite a lot of Mossie's, I still wonder if that is what caused all this in the 1st place?

Should I treat for fungal if I can do it with out disturbing the scabs? Just in case?

I have to admit, it certainly doesn't look like what your poor bird has. It started as a few black spots, they wern't critters - I checked, but then they starting popping up all over his comb and wattles and now his comb has tuned ashen almost looks like fungul infection but started as black spots, no oozing, always been dry. So possible bites but not sure why its turned whitish/grey now? His 2 girls are absolutely fine, I can separate them during the day but I only have 1 small wooden coop for night time unless I shut them up at night and let him roost on an outside roost - it is perfectly safe from prey - would that be ok? it's not cold here!
I wish I could give you advice, but I'm new to caring for birds myself. Learning as I go, helping with what I do know which isn't much. Best of luck to you, keep reading.

Do you have another cockerel?

Some of it looks like picking scabs, but other places look like insect bites. I would use a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust-since you are in Portugal look for a miticide to treat him, dust/spray at the neck, under the wings and around the vent. (DE is not going to help with insects). Treatment may help with deterring some of the insects.
Some of the scabs look a little bloody, but that could be from him scratching or from another chicken picking at him.

Looks like he has facial swelling, that could be from bites.
The white....well, could be dry skin or a fungal like Favus. You can use coconut oil, triple antibiotic ointment or the anti-fungal won't hurt either.

It's a bit interesting that he is the only one having problems. You would think the others would have bites and irritation too.

If you have a way to cage him and cover that with window screen to keep out the mosquitoes and flies, that may give him some relief as well.
Eating his normal food would be good.

Thank you Wyorp, I only have him and his 2 girls. I have just had him upside, back to front and virtually inside out inspecting every inch of him (much to his annoyance) and can't find a single mite or louse, his vent is clean and healthy looking as is his mouth, I very gently swabbed a small area of the comb and nothing came off and I definately couldn't see lice, I used a magnifying glass. His skin beneath his feathers is not irritated on his neck or under wings or around vent. I agree that it is probably insect bites. He does have an awful lot of new feathers coming in. So could it just be lack of sleep from pesky insects and perhaps need to increase his protein/vitamins for all the new feathers? Perhaps he is just genuinly run down!
