Help! Sick and dying peeps!

well first and for most you spoke of pasty rear ends

well that is caused by either too hot of temp in the brooder
or too cold in the brooder

ventilation needs to be no drafts but fresh air coming in

and possibly by giving them the sulmet you poisoned their gut

now comes the worst part

the gut has a enormous supply of E.coli

and I would see if the heat source is
98-95 degrees th first week
2nd week down 5 degrees

also if they are trying to get away from the heat lower it more

you need to do this
1 gallon of chick starter
1 cup of play school sand

feed only this and drop the grit they DO NOT need it yet

stop the sulmet this instant

they could not have coccidiosis in just two weeks

you got to get the E.coli treated like this


then give them the wet mash probiotic so they can make good gut flora
1 qt of dry crumble feed
2 qts of water
do this

fix what amts to 2 tsp per chick per time mixed wet mash plus vit's

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICK FED
and add 1- 1000 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each chick fed this wet mash
and 1 seliunium tablet crushed for each chick fed this wet mash
putting it in the wet mash

this for each chick your treating
so for each chick use 2 tsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E
and 1 sleinium tablet crushed in the wet mash probiotic
twice a day for them till the manure is solid


and feed each chick
2 tsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
till the chicks manure is right
then quit the Vit E and selinium make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life



2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis


the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem
take all the electrolytes out of the water

The peeps were dying before I started the medication, so I don't think that is the problem. Not sure.
I will definately follow your advice though. You seem a lot more knowledgeable than I do when it comes to this. Thank you again for your help. How did you learn so much?

Update -
Since giving the surviving peeps yougurt and hardboiled egg, none have died. I spoke with my friend Lori, and she gave one of the almost dead peeps fenbendazole (sp) thinking it might be gape worm. This peep was laying listless, almost dead. Yet within an hour of getting the wormer he was up and eating!!!!! Today he is right as rain. So she has given it to all the peeps (as I have)
Funny, I have been around chickens most of my life. I have only been on this site for a few days, and have already learned more in the past few days than I have ever known about chickens.

I'm so glad they're getting better!

I don't know anything about the gape worm med...but I'm glad the chick recovered. Meds like that kinds scare me so I will only give mine meds if they absolutely need it. I usually try a more natural approach (yogurt, egg yolk, vitamins, apple cider vinegar, etc).

Glad to know that no more have died lately, and I wanted to re-emphasize that they do NOT need to be on Sulmet for coccidiosis - there is NO WAY they have it this early. Medicated chick feed is good, though - it has a supplement in it that the cocci eat and can't really process, so it keeps their growth down until the chicks develop their own immunity.

Definitely stop the Sulmet, and go with the probiotic approach (yogurt) and vitamins (vitamin/electrolyte water - not too strong!). Good luck!

Ok so I am having this same problem as we speak. I have several birds from adults to 1 day born babies and as far as I know all of them act fine like nothing is wrong eating, growing and thriving. Now I bought 6 chicks in the mail from one very well known guy I don't want to say any namof a until I have to, but I am losing a chick a day I have only had them 3 days now and I lost one last night I have one dying in front of me right now and it's just like what you described when they first got here everything was fine they were eating and drinking and fine and then just yesterday one started just standing by itself not wanting to eat or drink honestly the way his eyes were and looked I thought is this chicken blind?? My babies already get medicated feed and drink electrolytes and probiotics in their water everyday. I wasn't sure what else to do because I had never lost a chicken not a big one or a baby so I have no idea because I cake home from work just like yesterday to another one acting just like the one yesterday and now I have it on a heating blanket and it's just laying there. They aren't to cold there are no drafts. They have their own room. If this one dies I will be down to 4 and I spent $30 per chick and $55 shipping and to have them dropping like flies is aweful is that how this person is makeinv their money??? But before I just want to know what I need to do with my babies I can't keep having them die one by one on me. It's aweful!!! Please help
