For about a week now I've had asthma and feeling achey off & on (it comes and goes). When I bought my birds from the feed store over 2 months ago one died. The others have all been fine since then. I didn't think much of it until today. - it has been pouring here (VA). I have my birds in a 'Chick n Barn & Run' that I bought from the feed store. They've been doing great until today. It poured so hard they were soaked., bedding was soaked, ground was puddles. It was hopeless to try to dry out anything since it's still pouring, so I grabbed all my babies and took them inside. They are now indoors in a small dog carrier with dry, fresh bedding, all huddled together sleeping. They looked happy.... Then I took out Ms. Peeps, my black cochin, (just to pet her a bit) and she was wheezing! No abnormal activity except that - she's always tame, so I didn't notice it at first since she always lets me hold her.

Should I be this concerned? After reading other posts on bird flu and respiatory diseases I'm now worried she might die, and worried I have might have something worse than simply allergies. I don't have any meds here for her (except aspirin, ibufrofen, and antibacterial creams). Is there anything I can give her until I can get to the store tomorrow morning? Should I be concerned about myself?

I don't have any medical chicken health books yet since I'm still a newbie. Thanks for any help you can give me!

I would try to get some vitamins to put in their water. you can also pick Terrimycin up cheap at any fleet farm or farm and fleet. I would do this asap sounds like she has resp distress. Could get worse. She prob got chilled from being so wet. Good luck..hope they do ok

that's so sad when they get sick. And I don't think you have to worry about catching anything from them at all.

Thanks for answering so quickly!

I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow and run in the morning to get the meds. I hope she'll be ok....I'll let you know in the morning.

I understand. I'm a worry wart, too. Just remember that the simplest explanation is most often the correct one. If you've not brought home new birds or visited any chicken farms recently, then it's not likely that it's something scary. You already know that you have respiratory problems. It sounds like all of you need some good rest and a vitamin boost. Tomorrow you'll have a better idea of where you stand.

Just a quick update: I gave the flock some antibiotics (tetracycline) in their water, and they are all doing well now. Ms Peeps (the black cochin) has stopped her wheezing, thankfully, and they all look very healthy....and fluffy. Boy, in just a week they've grown so much!

I just wanted to thank y'all for the moral support and for putting up with my craziness. I finally ordered the Chicken Health Book for future incidents (this can't be the only one, right?)
