yeah he seems great-just his cough?? I have people coming from TX any minute and Im laughing my head off becasue they were our neighbors 5 years ago and have no idea what Ive gotten my family into with chickens and ducks! They are going to be shocked because I NEVER would have lived like this 5 years ago-Now they are going to come into my house and see a massive duck in my tub and chickens free ranging all over today-its almost 40 today yeah!!!!

I don't know a whole lot about duck diseases, I must admit, but it could be Chlamydia psittaci, which is fairly common in ducks and causes eye discharge and respiratory symptoms, among other symptoms. You can look it up to see if he fits any of the other symptoms. That's what my duck Tux had, and now he's perfectly healthy and happy after a forty-five day course of quarantine and Doxycycline. It's not a fun disease to deal with because of the long medication course and the fact that it can spread to humans and other birds, but it can be cured.

I'm not sure if that's what he has, but it's worth looking into. Maybe a vet visit to someone who knows about ducks would be a good idea! Best of luck, I hope you find out what's wrong with him and he gets better.

Chlamidia psittaci? sounds like a venerial disease? My baby is still a virgin-no mates available but I wil look up that to see symptoms??? thank for the heads up-oh ps there arent any avian vets to be had within 100's of miles:-(

It could be that sticky duck head thing or what ever its called

My call ducks had that. I got a cloth in warm water and rubbed it gently around there eyes. Then I gave them a tub of water to take a bath in. It really seemed to help! The wheezing could be from not being able to blow his nose in water (you mentioned that I might not have a tub big enough for him to do so). I think if you just get him a bigger dish that will clear up. But then agian I'm NOT an exbert!

No, it's not a venereal disease at all. It can even spread through feather dust, so it's easy for it to spread even from wild birds to domestic flocks. Look it up on Google (specifically in birds, birds have slightly different symptoms than people do), there's some good information on it there. I'm hoping this isn't what he has because of the hassle of it, but it's worth looking into.

Aw, too bad about the vets... Keep looking through the internet about duck diseases, hopefully you'll figure out what he has.

By the way, my duck had these symptoms: Eye discharge, wheezing, some coughing, weakness to the point of being unable to stand or lift his head eventually, extreme amount of urates in his poop (watery poop, and it was green and not always fully digested), decreased appetite, and some dehydration because of the watery poop. He had had it for a long time before I got to him, though, so his symptoms may be more extreme than a bird who has just caught it.

i'm sorry about your duck. i honestly don't have any information on ducks. But have recently experienced upper respiratory issues in one of my chicken pens. Brought my favorite hen inside and into a cage, put a heat lamp on her, and created a humidifier. Took a pot of boiling water and added VetRX (smells like Vicks Vaporub). Put the pot on a table next to her cage then covered cage and table with pot in a sheet, so the moisture vapor would stay inside. She walked right over to that side of the cage and stood there breathing. She had sneezing and terrible wheezing for a day and a half, but she's okay now. Still waiting on a diagnosis on the other chickens from that pen.

i'm not sure if ducks are sensitive to VetRx or similar products, but it really helped with her breathing. If nothing else, a heat lamp could very well help your duck. When they're sick, i think it's hard from them to fight off infection when their bodies are also trying to deal with the cold.

Good luck and let us know how things go. He sure is a cutie.
