I have a Buff Orphington hen less than a yr old. She will not get out of the nesting boxes.. continues to stay in there for days. At first, I thought she was egg bound. However I have physically lifted her out of the box and put her out with the other hens where she eats and drinks and even defecates.. which leads me to believe she is NOT egg bound.
I'm watching her carefully.. making sure she is eating and drinking..

Due to weather they have been cooped up and refused to go into the run.. but the coop itself has plenty of space and things to keep them occupied. Lots of room to exercise... (12x14) 2 ladder style roosts.. hanging toys and plenty of warm fresh water and layer mash..scratch grains in the run..

She shows no outward signs of illness except for a lil white tip on her comb.. and is stiff legged when I put her down which I believe is due to her sitting in the boxes for too long. Possible just broody? Poor girl.. I have no rooster.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Welcome to BYC! Have you checked her thoroughly for mites and lice? Can you post a picture of her poop? When was the last time she laid an egg?

:lau That is DEFINITELY a broody chook!! Unmistakable and undeniable. Bless her. If you have no roo and no fertile eggs to give her, you need to break her of her broodiness. Shut her out of the nest box so she can't do this or she will just sit, lose weight and condition and sit on every egg she can :love

Broody! Too cute. My broody got pretty thin last year, so I eventually took the eggs. I lifted her off daily for a couole weeks to make her run around and free range, but she always rushed back to the nest after about five minutes.
