Hello, I am new at keeping chickens. My chicken is sick. I am not sure what type she is (red with a little black on her tail). Her name is Marge. I have seven chickens and we let them free range all day and we lock them in the coop at night. They love being outside all day. Two weeks ago I noticed them all to have dirty butts, on closer inspection they were coved in lice (all seven of them). I cleaned out the coop and sprinkled sevin through the coop and one by one I placed each chicken in a pillow case and powdered them good. Eight days later I repeated this whole process. The other 6 chickens look and act fine. But the one is not so good. She has been isolating herself from the group and closing her eyes and resting most days, she even tucks her head under her wing. She is not eating as much as the others. Every once in a while she makes a weird respiratory noise. She shakes her head a few times a day (mostly after eating) she opens her mouth frequently. She does perk up if I bring out a treat. Yesterday, I looked down her throat and it was normal (I was looking for the gape worm that I had convinced myself she had). Today I put 30 cc Wazine-17 in one gallon of water for them (I don't think any of them have ever been wormed) she wont drink it. So I decided to really give her a once over this morning. She is missing feathers on her neck and near her vent. I did not see any lice or other bugs on her but she does still have egg clusters near her vent (they are now dark brown) The last time she went to the bathroom it was a small dropping of white with a little water. When I tried to look down her mouth today her beak was slimy and she had not had a drink because I was watching her. She is only 18 months old, and I don't know what to do. I feed them Gold Seal feed, grit, oyster shells, scraps, and they get to eat all the grass and bugs they want.

I just went out to give them some cut up grapes and she did eat a few...

O gosh, I hope not. She has been ill about 2 weeks and the others show no symptoms. She is not stargazing. Do you think isolating her now is pointless?

It's not ND. Have you checked Infectious Laryngotracheitis or Infectious Bronchitis?

She does seem to have difficulty swallowing. She has no eye or nasal drainage. It seems that many sicknesses carry the same signs. Do you think I should isolate her?

Tonight I did watch her drink water with the wazine-17 in it. She also devoured pot roast and mashed potatoes. Her tail is sticking straight out and sometimes down, does anyone know what that means?

Need more symptoms to get a diagnosis.
Does she close her eyes?

Yes, she does close her eyes. She wants to rest all of the time. She will sit alone and tuck her head under her wing. Still no drainage from her eyes and nose. She perks right up if I bring out treats.

Update on Marge: today I gave her another once over (she is still acting the same). I got a real good look in her mouth and it looks like she has a lesion on her tounge. Maybe wet pox?? She has no other lesions. She is raspy and having a hard time eating. She will fill her mouth and acts like the food will not go down, the she shakes her head to remove the food. All other symptoms are still present (see prior posts). On another note, I still have another concern. We had a pretty bad lice infestation. I treated with Sevin twice, eight days apart (chickens and coop). A few of the birds (including Marge) still have eggs near the vent on the base of the feathers!! I guess I will treat a third time with the Sevin, is this normal?? And if Marge has wet pox are my other chickens going to get ill?? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, Marge is still alive, but her feathers are now falling out. I went to a farm store and started to tell her the story, she stopped me when I told her that I had treated the whole flock with Sevin. She told me that I Had poisoned them. She said that she had been raising chickens for a long time and would never use Sevin on or near them. She said that it could take 30 days to get out of her system. Has anyone heard of this before?
