Hello! I need help with a sick peahen. I have currently 6 peafowls, 2 males, 4 females. They all became ill towards some degree with blackhead at least. Poop was as show in the picture. I started treating them 5 days ago with metrodinazole. 50mg/kg, amprolium and baytril. They are all out of the blue by now showing almost no yellow and normal dropings exept for the girl in the picture who 5 days later after treatment shows minor signs of improvement as shown in the picture of the yellow poop of today. Can someone tell me why? When she was bought she had cocci i believe and became ill near death but managed to save her. Does she need vitamins and probiotics? Can vitamins and probiotics be mixed with amprolium, metronidazole and baytril? Can fenbendazole be mixed with amprolium, metronidazole and baytril ? She is still lively, happy, has good appetite and shows no other symptoms except for the yellow poop. Please help me keep her alive and well! Thanks alot!

As a general rule I do not do the 'shotgun' approach, I run a fecal exam and see what it is I need to treat for. BH will not show on a slide so I can only rule out cocci and worms with that exam. When I treat for BH I give 250mg per day for five days. When that treatment time is up I stop with the drug. Both roundworms and Cecal worms is a one-day treatment with a follow-up dose ten days later. The treatment for cocci is a three to five-day treatment. I think you are right with the idea of giving a probiotic but it will do no good as long as you are giving an antibiotic. At this point, I think you have developed a yeast infection from all the drugs. I would stop all drugs and give the probiotics. You know what you are doing and you are doing it right, I have been where you are and lost a bird from treating too long and developing the yeast infection. I see two choices, stop everything except the Baytril, give 1.0ml SQ for the next three days followed with the probiotics or just stop everything and do the probiotics. Good luck and let us know how your bird responds.

Thanks a lot KsKingBee! Will search for a vet to do the fecal exam tomorrow. I started probiotics the same day i asked, lets see how she fares the next days. Your response means a lot. I live in Costa Rica right now and new to the forum, what is the composition in SQ? I assume fenbendazol. thanks!

Never assume anything, always ask for clarification. SQ means giving the shot just under the skin and not in the muscle. Many medications can damage the muscle and must be given between the skin and the meat. Fenbendazole is given orally.

Thanks again. I stopped all treatment and went with probiotics and vitamims and this is the result. I believe I see improvement. Yellow is almost gone. The brown poop looks like cecal worms to me but I dont know. How long should i wait before suspending probiotics and vitamins and starting fenbendazole? Or continue treating cocci?

I re-read your post, I thought you had already given the Fenbendazole. You have already done the recommended treatment with the amprolium so go ahead and give the Fenbendazole for a one-day treatment for round and cecal worms, then another dose ten days from now. I would keep doing the probiotics for another day or two.

Amprolium i actually gave for only one day on the bad advise of a local veterinarian. Didnt want to mix before.

Sorry if Im asking too much but fenbendazol is 50mg/kg single dose for one day , then repeat 10 days after right? In solid form. I couldnt find pills just an envelope of 10g at 22% fenbendazole which says to administer 5-7.5mg/kg dissolved in water which is a diferent dose from the first one, not sure if it is insuficient. Should I wait until I find pills to cut in order to give 50mg/kg? For capilliary worms the dose would be 50mg/kg per day for 5 days? Thanks in advance , you may be saving my dear friends here.
