Apologies in advance. I know this subject has been dealt with many times here, but this is my second post today (impacted crop) & time to scroll thru archives is short.
30 minutes ago my hen puffed up, squatted and halfway expelled a soft egg. It broke during the process and liquid & yolk trickled out. I was able to pull the shell out intact very easily.
She went to the nesting box and stayed a few minutes then came down for treats when I called everybody in to lock the coop down for the night. She still seemed a little off. I decided to let her be as most of my hens are kind of in a zone for a while after laying an egg.

Should I try to check her inside, flush her out, or anything else? Or would it be okay to just let her roost overnight see how she feels in the morning?

Sorry about not noticing this sooner. How is she doing?

Let her behavior tell you how she's doing. If she's back to her normal behavior, strutting around with tail held high and eating okay and interacting with the others, she's likely in the clear.

However, if she continues to act "off", it may indicate another egg is in the works. Often, thin-shell or shell-less eggs are one of two that come down the oviduct at the same time. They almost always cause trouble like your hen is having.

If she is still acting "off", give her a calcium tablet like this.

One whole tablet directly into the beak. One per day until her problem is resolved and she's back to laying normal eggs.

She was roosting at dusk. Just checked this morning & she was waiting for her favorite nesting box. Eagerly ate from my hand and clucking. All good.
I think you're right about another egg on the way. Wondered about that last night as she still was pushing as I checked her out a few minutes after clearing the soft egg.
I saw a little poo with what looked like some egg white in it, so I assume it was hers. I'm hoping to catch her laying this morning but had to shift gears to tend to my impaction patient.
Thank you for the advice. I'll pick up the calcium tabs when I go out today.
