Big Head, my prized Barred Plymouth Rock rooster, isn't well, and Im not sure what is wrong with him. I have tried googling symptoms, but nothing stands out as exactly correct, and moreover, the list of possible diseases/problems is overwhelming. That being said, it is impossible to treat his issue if I am not even sure what his issue is.

Big Head is about a year old. He and my flock roam my somewhat large yard and get along; they were all bought and raised together. Last spring, I had bought day old pullets and a roo, and ended up with two roosters, who ALWAYS got along until about 2 weeks ago. I came home from work to discover Big Head and the other roo had gotten into a scrap, so I separated Big Head, as he took the brunt of it (bloody comb, ect.) but he acted just fine. I was going to keep him separated until I found a home for the roo that I dont care as much for.

I built a little pen for him and stuck him in there, and he seemed fine. Three or so days ago, I noticed that he was staying on his roost pole almost all day- and I hadnt heard him crow. The weather has been cold and depressing, rain, snow, ect., so I figured he was just miserable like me. Then this morning I came home for work (night turn,) and he was on the ground and I noticed a few things.

1. He is obviously depressed. He wont come to me, nor eat any treats I offered him.. even his favorite: grapes. Usually he runs to me, and even harder if he thinks hes getting something.
2. His comb is drooped over.
3. He can hardly keep his eyes open.
4. WHEN he walks, it's like he double steps, or is unsure of his footing... I am not exactly sure how to describe it.. but it isnt normal.
5. He's huddled up with his feathers poofed out.
6. No crowing.
and finally, 7... I dont think he has ate or drank much.

I have no idea what is wrong with him.. I have tried googling the symptoms and come up with everything from worms to collolisis (sp) to an infection from fighting.

Any ideas???????

Oh and I forgot, his tail feathers are all drooped, dragging the ground.

..As far as his poop, I looked for fresh droppings but didn't see any.. Though I seen one or two dried out ones. That had no shape, and were a little yellow, like the color of mustard.

Look around the vent, they like moist places. You'll see little white or red bugs crawling. They are not hard to miss. Also look in his crest. You can bathe him in Adams flea and tick shampoo, then blow dry him real good and spray the flea and tick spray on him, or put poultry dust on him. Mites will kill in a matter of a couple days if it's a bad infestation.

Very Carefully !

Im sorry couldnt help it.
Let us know how he is doing.....I never had one with Mites so im learning too.
How do they get Mites?

Is he gaping at all or showing respiratory distress? Any fluids / boogers coming out around eyes or nose?

Try to atleast seperate him from the flock so that he doesn't spread anything atleast until you have a better idea of whats going on.
I agree with the bug check it is prime season for those nasty things to start infesting.

I am warning you though you will get the creepy crawlies if you find them
