HELP! ...something is wrong with my Rooster!

Very Carefully !

Im sorry couldnt help it.
Let us know how he is doing.....I never had one with Mites so im learning too.
How do they get Mites?

Just by existing they get mites! Ugly buggers are always out there and other small animals can carry them close to your critters too.

I think you should start with these basics already suggested. Worm him if you haven't done so in the past 6 months or so. I would just go ahead and treat for lice and mites. Sevin dust works great, just repeat in 7-10 days to get the newly hatched bugs.

As for worming, Dawg has shared a handy table on the best wormers and it looks to be one called valbazene because it will actually kill ALL the different types of worms. He knows the correct dose and I know he will share.

Also, do you have a way to bring him somewhere where he will be warm? He will need it while he is not feeling well. See if you can tempt him with some other foods. Most seem to love srambled eggs and mine have eaten them even when they wouldn't touch anything else. Maybe even some cooked oatmeal. Good luck, I hope he gets better for you. Also,

Look in the feathers around his vent and under his wings where the feathers are sparsest. If he has them you'll see them. When you dust him (some folks use sevin dust, others just use food grade diatomaceous earth) don't forget to do the roost (some folks use malathion spray) as the little buggers will hid underneath and in the cracks of the roosts/coop.

It seems to be the season for them as the weather warms, I had two hens get very lethargic and depressed, dusted them and they recovered. One hen I didn't get to in time and she died.

Thank you all for the replies.. I am going to go pick up some Sevin dust tomorrow.. I use it on my peach trees, so I will be needing it soon anyhow. I hope he makes it through the night, as by the time I read all of the replies, it is well past dark. Hard to believe someone can have feelings for a chicken, let alone a rooster, but I suppose it happens. I also have a favorite hen, "Sweet Hen," I call her, I sincerely hope the other chickens done pick it up from him.

Assuming it is mites (Ill let everyone know first thing in the morning..) how long from the application of Sevin dust until he begins to recover, or at least until I notice a difference in his behavior?

If I DON'T see any mites, I suppose I will proceed to worming, which none of my chickens have ever been wormed, so I suppose I should do so anyhow. It was only today that I learned that they needed to be regularly wormed; who knew!?!

One more thing. Will mites transfer to people or place my dog in any danger? Thanks so much!!!!!

Ok guys, based upon your advice and recommendations, last night I put a heat lamp in his box, to make him a little more comfortable. This morning I went out to check him for mites:

I checked under his wings, around his vent and up around his head; I didnt see anything crawling around.

I did notice however, dried poop around his vent, it looks as if it may have exited as a liquid but I cant be sure, and it is light yellow colored.

To check his vent, I turned him upside down by grabbing (gently) his legs and lifting him upside down, whereas he 'came to life' and started flapping and carrying on for five or ten seconds, then calmed down. As I was checking his vent, he vomited.. or more accurately, liquid came out of his mouth, and though I cant be absolutely sure, it almost looks as if it has mucus in it.. if that makes any sense?

Help?

Also, now, as he stands there, he puts his head up with his mouth open for a few seconds, (though it doesn't seem as if he is gasping..) and then closes his mouth.. and repeats every ten seconds or so.

just read it isn't a good idea to put a chicken upside down, it puts alot of pressure on their lungs, and the liquid probably came from his crop. plus when turning him upright you risk a chance of him aspirating the liquid into his lungs.

The vomit was probably just his crop emptying out. The first time I picked up a hen upside down and she did that I freaked out! I would still dust him with sevin dust. But I might give him some vitamins and electrolytes (you can get the kind for chickens at the feed store and it isn't too expensive) in his water. Perhaps some antibiotic. See if he will eat some yogurt or scrambled eggs. (You can just nuke some in the microwave-chickens don't care if the eggs are fluffy or not!)

If the mites are the kind that hide during the day you may have to check with a flashlight at night. If he is anemic from blood loss, he just needs to recuperate and have lots of treats and TLC in a dark, quiet place.

Other than that I don't know what to tell you, except that chickens are fighters and they can bounce back from things you are sure will kill them. If they are going to die, they usually do so quickly so the longer he hangs on the more likely he is to recover. IME

Good Luck!

For safety sake not sure if you are awair of it you can use frontline on your birds, all birds. I put it on my parrots and all my chickens every three months. i literally put one or two drops on them . near the reear or the chicken on the skin, by the next day any external paracties will be off the bord. I buy the large frontline for dogs put is in a serenge and the carefully put 1-3 drops on my birds depending on size!! if you havwe a boird that is really lethargis and going down hill. Ripe babanna, and bread soaked in milk, i only have done this to birds that were so sich they could not eat, i would forcefeed them and with in two days of doing this they are back to normal. Also, i will put tylan in water to help fight anything that is going on!!
