I am fairly new to chickens. I have (well........had 3) hens and 5 baby chicks. Thanks to a bear I now have 2 hens and one of them is wounded! HOWEVER, it was her being wounded and me trying to treat that wound that opened my eyes to another problem and one that has probably been around for some time and I've been too stupid to pick up on it.

Ok here goes - my hen that was hurt by the bear is wounded on her back end and I had to trim back what was left of her feathers to treat her. Now that her vent is exposed I see a thick off-white ooze coming from her vent! Now, I know this is not new and from the bear attack because I have seen a "slight" bit of it not only on her but the other two, but it was so slight and infrequent AND they always seemed fine, ate, drank, talked to me etc..... so I never thought anything about it. Well now I realize the reason it looked like a "slight" amount was because it's been buried under all those feathers!

My mom said it may be a fungus? I just wondered if there is anybody out there who might know exactly what I'm referring to and what I need to do to help. Now that I've seen it closer - this can't be normal! I feel terrible that I let this go on!
