I’ve got an Easter Egger hen, about a year old, that has been laying flawlessly until about a week ago when she started laying rubber eggs. The shells have gotten harder the last couple of days but are still somewhat soft. Today her egg was busted open and a large, rather firm, brown blob (a little larger than a nickel) with a “tail” was inside. The egg white was a little bit bloody as well. The yolk looked normal. These are pasture raised chickens. They are fed organic layer pellets mixed with game bird feed. They have access to grit and all the bugs, greens, etc they can find in our pasture. I’ve never seen anything like this. Anyone have any insight? Is my sweet girl going to be ok?

Yes, there was a yolk that looked normal. I did not cut the blob open. I do still have it in a plastic container but it is somewhat dried up now.

Was there a yolk in there too?
Did you cut the blob open?

Go ahead and cut it....well, I would, out of an almost obsessive curiosity....you don't have to. :D

I cut it open... basically it looked like a blood clot. From what I was reading in the links provided, it could have been a follicle. Either way, she is back to herself and laid an egg yesterday and today. Yay!! I laughed when you posted to cut it open. I had set it aside and my husband was totally grossed out and was like WHY ARE YOU KEEPING THAT?! I told him someone might want me to cut it open!!! 🤣😂🤣
