Of course! Not a fun situation. Water freezing tends to not be fun sometimes. I am just happy they are all safe. The water must have lasted them way way longer then I expected. Bigger pan of water in case of emergency or wired situation is vital

As I said, we don't get water freezing in SoCal. But what do the rest of you in colder climes find? Can chickens peck there way through a little bit of freezing? Do nipples freeze up even if the reservoir doesn't? Does the whole water supply ever freeze solid? If chickens break off bits of ice does that do the trick for their water need?

Just curious since I've never dealt with it. But one day, all things working out as we hope, we may move to OR and get our lick at keeping chickens through a real winter. Not likely a lot of snow but cold to be sure.

Yes, EVERYTHING can freeze. It stinks. We use deep large rubber pans for water and also use saltwater bottles and a heat lamp to keep it from freezing. You have to go out to the coop more to remove ice and refill with warm water

I have a heater for keeping the metal waterer thawed on most days, but sometimes it freezes; -15 seems about the breaking point. I have 2 of the double wall waterers, one 8 gallon and one 5 gallon; and when one freezes up, the other one gets put to use. It really sucks when the 8 gallon one freezes up when it is nearly full.

Those $20 electric 6 quart dog water bowls are what I use inside the coop from November until April during freezing weather. Tractor Supply, Rural King, and Wlmart sell them. They only come on when the air temperature is 35 or below, and the water remains cold. Very inexpensive to use. Outside I use 1 gallon black rubber bowls that get emptied when they go to bed, and refilled first thing in the morning.
