Help! There is a skunk in my coop now!

It's a good recipe, if you have all the ingredients at 2am when you need it! In a true emergency, washing, rinsing, and then rinsing in dilute vinegar helps a lot.
Skunk Off works best, but again, it's 2am!

You are right. Most times you will have vinegar in the house even though you may not have peroxide. However, since there are a lot of skunks here and I have two not-too-bright dogs I make sure I always have peroxide and baking soda on hand at all times. Always.

lysol will keep them away works great and take all food and water out put food outside coop spray coop to run him out but they can spray many times so stay clear. Hope it works out well and they will kill chickens

I do know a bit about skunks. They won’t spray unless startled or threatened. If you can find his route into your yard, try putting cayenne pepper powder at the entry to your property. As to how to get him out, just wait? They are almost blind so they hear well but don’t see well. Maybe try standing at least 25 feet away and popping a plastic or paper bag. Maybe he’ll make a run for it. Good luck.

This is % what 22s are for! I wouldn’t worry about damaging their hearing. A 22 has such a quick crack. Definitely better than hand to hand combat, in my opinion.

It's been over a week now. Is the skunk still in the coop?

I was burying my good old buddy Rudy. A big knucklehead boxer that never left my side. I put him in the dirt behind the coop where i sit in the shade on hot summer days. Needless to say i was in a really bad place. It was dark outside.Thru the coop window i saw something moving around on the ground. Skunk. I bust thru the door and sent a whole mess of lead and fire at that animal. It sprayed everything but me before dying. I went in thru the other door to drag this stinking thing out of my coop. Something caught my eye. Another skunk! It was dancing and stomping at me and a foot from my feet. The rest of my magazine went at that poor critter as i back peddled.
I have since researched a lot about these animals and while i can't un do what i did, i can regret it. I think there are many ways to keep the predators from my birds. There are also better ways to kill them if need be. I encourage everyone to fortify your coop, do inspections of your coop and runs, and most importantly think before you act. I recently ran across a Pinterest of pictures of baby skunks. You don't want to see those if you've done what i did. Good luck keeping those birds safe.
